A woman returns to Tunisia for her uncle's funeral, where a reunion with her family forces her to confront secrets, repression and the reasons that once drove her away.
À voix basse (In a Whisper) is an intimate family drama by Leyla Bouzid that explores clandestine homosexuality and the tensions between generations within a middle-class Tunisian family. As Lilia reconnects with old friends and begins to question the circumstances of her uncle's sudden death, personal and family histories gradually come to the surface.
As part of this year's Film Days, the film invites us to think about the stories that families carry, the stories that remain unspoken, and how personal stories are shaped by wider structures of repression and social expectations. Through its intimate and playful approach to storytelling, the film asks what becomes possible when these silences are finally given a voice.
