THE MASTERCLASS
From novel
to film.
In those ten years, Egypt experienced political upheavals of historic significance and the project repeatedly came close to being abandoned. In this masterclass, Samir Nasr recounts the unusual, at times adventurous journey from the first idea through political and artistic resistance to the completed film.
He speaks openly about struggles, compromises and setbacks, and about what it means to make a political film in conditions that are constantly changing.
The relationship between novel and film is central: what remains of the literary source, what had to change, and why? Nasr will also speak about developing the screenplay with Sonallah Ibrahim, one of Egypt's most important writers, who died last year.
